Chief Executive Officer
Rob Routley is Chief Executive Officer of Acorn Capital and has product management responsibilities for all investments held in client portfolios. In addition he has responsibility for the identification, investment and ongoing portfolio management of unlisted investments.
Rob joined Acorn Capital in 2007. Prior to joining Acorn Capital, Rob held investment management roles with Colonial First State Private Equity and Baron Corporation.
Rob holds a Bachelor of Commerce and a MBA from the University of Melbourne. He is also a Chartered Accountant.
Matt is responsible for the origination, assessment and ongoing management of unlisted investments, with a particular focus on the structuring and documentation of unlisted investments. Matt began his career as a private practice lawyer and worked at law firms in Melbourne, New York and London. Prior to joining Acorn Capital, Matt worked at Macquarie Capital as the General Counsel and Company Secretary of a number of Macquarie-managed listed and unlisted funds.
Matt holds a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from Monash University and Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Master of Applied Finance, both from the University of Melbourne.
Tony’s responsibilities are primary analysis of unlisted microcap investment proposals and data analysis. Tony has more than 45 years of investment experience. Prior to joining Acorn Capital, he worked with Legg Mason Asset Management, Citigroup Asset Management, JP Morgan Asset Management, Salomon Smith Barney Asset Management and Colonial First State, where he was responsible for investment analysis and portfolio management.
Tony is a Chartered Financial Analyst, a CPA, a Fellow of Finsia and holds a Diploma in Business Studies.
Head of Research (Australia) & Investment Analyst
Rob joined Acorn Capital in June 2014 as the investment analyst for private markets and became Head of Research (Australia) in Jan 2015. Rob joined Acorn Capital from CLSA Asia Pacific Markets in Asia where he spent the 13 of the past 17 years in equity research. Rob initially moved to Hong Kong in 1997 and then to Singapore as a multi-sector analyst for CLSA. He returned to Australia in 2000 and worked as an Associate Director of small cap research at UBS Warburg (Sydney) and then as a research manager at Kaplan Funds Management. Rob then moved to become a Senior Analyst at Westpac Institutional Bank (Sydney) covering Food and Beverage. He returned to CLSA in December 2004 as the senior analyst for the Korean consumer and regional food and beverage sectors. In 2008, Rob was made Head of regional transport and infrastructure research before being appointed as Head of Research, Singapore in February 2012. Prior to his equity research career he spent 5 years in insolvency for Ferrier Hodgson, Melbourne.
Rob was educated in Melbourne and holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and is a Chartered Accountant.
Karina joined Acorn Capital in 2009. She is responsible for analysing and maintaining the resource sector database for the Australia ASX listed fund. Karina conducts the fundamental investment research on companies in the Energy and Materials – Resources sectors, and selects investments for client portfolios. Prior to joining Acorn Capital, Karina worked as an exploration geologist in the mining industry for eight years and as a senior research analyst in the government sector for seven years.
Karina has a Bachelor of Science (Hons) from Monash University and a Master of Business Administration (Technology Management) from Deakin University.
Ben is the Portfolio Manager responsible for Financials, Capital Goods, REITs and Utilities. Ben joined Acorn Capital in 2014 from Citigroup where he was head of Citi’s Emerging Growth equities research team for 4 years, covering a broad range of stocks in the Small Cap and Micro Cap sectors. Ben has 20 years’ experience looking at Australian and Asian capital markets on both the “buy side” and the “sell side”, having worked with Citi, Challenger, Goldman Sachs and HSBC. At Acorn Capital, Ben’s responsibilities will include stock analysis and selection, portfolio construction and monitoring.
Ben holds a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from La Trobe University and a Master of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Melbourne.
Brian joined Acorn Capital in 2015 and is an Analyst assisting Portfolio Managers in the non-Resources sectors.
Brian joined Acorn Capital as a graduate following the completion of his Bachelor of Commerce and Masters of Finance at the University of Melbourne.
Portfolio Manager / Analyst / Dealing
Paul is the Portfolio Manager responsible for the Healthcare & Biotechnology sector. He also oversees the dealing function and portfolio analytics within Acorn Capital. Paul joined Acorn Capital in February 2007. Prior to joining Acorn Capital Paul worked at Mercer and IBM Business Consulting Services in Melbourne as a business analyst.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Business (Information Systems) and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance.
Rick joined Acorn Capital in June 2016 as a Resource Analyst. He is responsible for undertaking fundamental research on companies in the Energy and Materials (Resources) sectors. Rick has extensive technical experience as a Geologist, working intricately with management in a career spanning over 20 years.
Rick holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) and a PhD in Geology.
Fund Operations / Administration
Finance and Administration Manager
Kate is responsible for the accounting, office and portfolio administration functions of the company. Kate’s accounting career began in Melbourne as a taxation consultant; she then spent six years working overseas, firstly in the Trust industry at HSBC Private Bank in Guernsey and then at Butterfield Bank in the Cayman Islands. This was followed by UBS in the Cayman Islands where Kate worked as a hedge fund accountant and administrator.
Kate holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne and is a qualified Chartered Accountant in Australia.
Eng is responsible for the development and maintenance of Acorn Capital’s information technology systems, including the company’s proprietary microcap sector database. Prior to joining Acorn Capital, Eng worked as an assistant lecturer at Monash University.
Eng holds a Bachelor of Computer Science and has an Honours Degree in Business Systems with Monash University. He also has a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance.
